IFComp News: Quixe versus Parchment

Brief note to authors:

If you’re uploading your Inform-based game as a website that uses the Quixe interpreter, then you may have noticed that the website seems to load Parchment instead of Quixe if you try to preview your game. This is due to a mistake on my part, regarding some secret server-side sauce that reaches a little too far when it comes to Inform games.

I am going to give this some attention over the weekend; will update the blog further when it’s fixed. Thanks for your patience, and my apologies for the inconvenience.

DestinyQuest TV – kind of…

I have some exciting news to share for DestinyQuest fans and those who may be thinking of giving the series a go. I was recently contacted by Doug Shute of Victory Condition Gaming who had a rather interesting proposition.

Doug has a network of channels on YouTube, Twitch and Livestream. He started the channels because both he and his nine-year-old daughter, Sydney, were keen to share their love of tabletop and board games. Since starting their shows, Sydney has really taken to some of the RPG live sessions on YouTube and wanted to create her own RPG show for the VCG channel. Doug then had the bright spark of an idea – how about doing a live gamebook playthrough? And so, ‘Page Turners’ was born.

Doug already owned a copy of DestinyQuest 1: The Legion of Shadow, and had dabbled with the gameplay and loved it, but the hectic pace of life meant that he had never got to finish it. So, the idea of ‘Page Turners’ seemed like the perfect opportunity to get immersed in the world of DestinyQuest once more, and introduce his daughter to the mechanics of an RPG adventure – in book form.

I have wholeheartedly given my approval for the series – as I think it will be a great way of getting new players involved with DestinyQuest. One of the neat things I liked about the idea was that, potentially, you could have a copy of the book and play along with Doug and Sydney at the same time. Of course, players may choose to make different choices at times – but via the comments and collaborative nature of the streams, these alternate adventures could also be discussed and compared as the series develops.

I have warned Doug that, unlike later books in the series, The Legion of Shadow is very much a combat-orientated battle-fest of dice rolling(!), but he is up for the challenge and has his lucky dice at the ready.

Will Doug and Sydney complete their adventure or will they face defeat at the hands of the sinister Legion? I guess we will all get to find out – and enjoy their journey along the way.

If you’d like to follow and subscribe to the series, then here are all the important dates and links you’ll need:

Channel links

I hope you can join us for what I hope will be an exciting series!

Happy adventuring!

MJW

IFComp News: On styling Inform-based entries for online play

Everything in last year’s post about IFComp online play remains true for this year. Except for the bit about us being hard at work, that is – I’m happy to report that we wrapped all that work in time for the 2104 competition, and that work will continue to serve this year’s comp as well.

I did wish to make a small clarification of interest to Inform-using authors, regarding the matter of uploading bare game files versus whole websites.

Bare Z-code or Glulx file uploads will use Parchment’s minimal, default style of black text on a white background, as seen here, for example. This makes for a plain but functional online-play version of your game.

If you want to either apply your own CSS-based styles to your game’s Parchment version, or you wish to use the more full-featured Quixe as your game’s web-based interpreter rather than Parchment, then upload your entry as an entire, self-contained website, rather than just the plain story file.

Generally speaking, this latter path refers to the results of adding the magic Release along with an interpreter line to your Inform project’s source. If you wish, you can then use custom CSS, HTML, and other standard techniques to style the resulting website as much as you’d like. Finally, package that site up with a zip utility, and make that one file your uploaded IFComp entry.

IFComp News: Three new serial IFs by past IFComp champs

There currently exist no fewer than three in-progress episodic IF works by authors who have released top-ten-finishing IFComp works in past years. These are those of which I am aware, in alphabetical order (am I missing any?):

  • 18 Rooms to Home by Carolyn VanEseltine (One Eye Open, 2010; Beet the Devil, 2011; Ollie Ollie Oxen Free, 2013) presents the same world with each chapter, except larger by one room (in the parser-IF sense), containing that much more possibility for exploration and discovery. The first chapter contains only the end of the story, and it grows backwards from there.

  • Bloom by Caelyn Sandel (One Eye Open, 2010), is a lightly interactive hypertext about the gradual acceptance of one Andy Blumenthal, well into a lifetime of assumed-masculine gender identity, that she is in truth a woman named Cordy.

  • Feu de Joie by Alan DeNiro (Solarium, 2013) puts the player into the role of a QA specialist testing a digitized catalog of century-old essays, just as things start to get a bit weird. Includes feelies, as well as some optional content for the player to discover elsewhere on the internet.

Worth noting: all three series are supported by their respective creators’ Patreons, the links to which you can find from the games’ respective websites.
